Behold! A Poet

If my words
can touch your heart
and cause a knowing smile
'twill help me know
I've dared to root
fond memories so worthwhile.
And I shall then be enabled
to exclaim, "behold!
I am a poet!"

And if by my words
you are enabled
to journey to a place
where many private memories
had long since been erased.
I shall then be enabled
to exclaim, "behold!
I am a poet!"

So then I say
if but one word
plus a thousand more
are merely worth one picture
'tis not worth waiting for!
So Climb aboard
the many words
of magic and dare ride
their wondrous dreams
to mem'ry land
where there you shall abide.
And I shall then be enabled
to exclaim, "behold!
I am a poet!"

And if these words of merit
worth more than
a thousand pictures seen
should live forever
in your mind
and nourish every dream
and so upon my passing
on my headstone
t'will be inscribed:
"behold! Here truly lies a poet;
and t'was so,
long before he died!"
