After the storms, we were feeling forlorn
And decided to take a ride.
For it was too hot to hike, so we hopped on our bikes...
We pedaled, we looked and we sighed.
For neighbors all 'round had been beaten up sound
By Ivan and Charlie, so strong and so mean.
The girls came by too, as I'm sure you know
'Twas Feisty Frances, Brutal Bonnie Not-So-Nice- Jeanne!
AND AS YOU MIGHT GUESS, THE TOWNS WERE A MESS!
IT MADE THE HEART WANT TO WEEP.
BUT LIFE MUST GO ON AND HOPE WAS NOT GONE!
WE HAD THINGS TO DO AND PROMISES TO KEEP!
THE TREES WERE ALL BARE, SHINGLES EVERYWHERE...
I WONDERED WHERE THE WATER HAD GONE.
WE SAW ALL KINDS OF THINGS THAT A BAD STORM BRINGS,
BUT I STILL FELT IN MY HEART A GLAD SONG!
FOR I HAD SPOTTED A SMILE IN HALLOWEEN STYLE
ON A PUMKIN CARVED WITH GREAT CARE.
IT SAT ON THE PORCH FLOOR, JUST OUTSIDE THE DOOR...
I WONDERED WHO'D PUT IT THERE.
WE PEDALED ALL 'ROUND OUR QUIET LITTLE TOWN,
LOOKING FOR MORE SIGNS OF HUMOR AND FUN.
WE SAW PUMPKINS AND CATS, WITCHES AND BATS
AND EVEN A GHOST, BEFORE WE WERE DONE!
WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN, THIS HALLOWEEN SCENE
IN THE MIDST OF A NEIGHBORHOOD BLEAK?
IT MEANS HOPE IS NOT GONE, THAT SPIRIT LIVES STRONG
AND A SMILE OR TWO IS WHAT WE ALL SEEK!
SO, WE PEDALED ON BY, WITH A HEARTFELT SIGH
AND BACK AT THE PUMPKIN I GRINNED.
I WAVED AT THE BAT, TO THE WITCH TIPPED MY HAT...
IT WAS TIME FOR HALLOWEEN FUN TO BEGIN!
